Discrimination: Cognitive Biases in the Workplace
Cognitive biases exist in virtually every aspect of life, especially in the workplace. Several cognitive biases may seem normal and unnoticeable to most people because it is commonly overlooked due to diversity in social constructs. Societies incorporate cognitive biases into the construction of their immediate and extended cultural values, principles, and experiences, as well as the elements of the environment, which propagate and differentiate normality from abnormalities regarding societal expectations that are based on cultures, customs, traditions, practices, and especially, the way people think.
Conservatism bias colloquially referred to as conservatism, is one of the most prevalent types of cognitive bias that still occurs in the workplace. Conservatism bias is the preference or inclination toward familiarity rather than considering new or updated information, data, methods, thinking, or practices. Several people are skeptical of significant changes or differences because it requires them to consider unfamiliar thinking and new perceptions that they disregard due to their self-imposed inability to embrace suppositions that they believe are irrational or contradictory to their preconceptions without any supporting empirical evidence to justify their biases.
