That is one of the several reasons scholars use to discredit philosophy and psychology. As of now, we can only describe it by its axiom of intrinsic existence. Even if we were aware of consciousness, we wouldn't know it because it cannot be expressed in the past or future, but only in the present; unless, we consider transcendental idealism over empirical idealism, but that in itself is redundant because we'd arrive to where we began---what is consciousness? For all we know, we could be a "brain in a vat" or a "simulation" like a solipsist ideal.
